Happy Lunar New Year 2024! Here at Triple Momentum we wish you all the best and luck in the year of the Blue Dragon!
What is Seollal?
In Korea, the Lunar New Year is known as Seollal (설날). Seollal marks the first day of the Korean Lunar Calendar. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which follows the solar year, the lunar calendar determines Seollal’s date. The term “Seollal” combines “seol” (설), meaning “the beginning of the year,” and “nal” (날), which translates to “day.”
Family Traditions During Seollal
Seollal is a time of heartfelt reunions. Families travel back to their hometowns and reunite with their families after their busy everyday life. Families set up ancestral memorial tables with food, fruits, and other offerings- Charye (차례). They pay homage to their ancestors, seeking their protection and guidance, welcoming the new year.
Traditionally, younger family members bow deeply to their elders, expressing respect and seeking blessings - Sebae (세배). Elders then offer words of wisdom and good wishes. Families engage in fun folk games like yutnori (a board game with sticks) and jegichagi (a shuttlecock kicking game). On Seollal, traditional dishes like tteokguk (rice cake soup) and jeon (savory pancakes) are prepared and shared. Tteokguk, for example, symbolizes longevity and renewal.

The Year of the Dragon
In 2024, Seollal celebrates the Year of the Dragon. The dragon symbolizes strength, power, wisdom, good fortune, and success. It’s believed that 2024 is an auspicious year for starting new projects, exploring opportunities, and creating value for oneself and others. Seollal isn’t just a holiday; it’s a tapestry woven with family bonds, cultural heritage, and hopes for prosperity.
In celebration of Seollal, we have officially launched our Year Of The Blue Dragon Hoodie. This hoodie will bring you strength, wisdom and prosperity all year round.
So, 새해 복 많이 받으세요 (saehae bog manh-i bad-euseyo) – may you receive a lot of luck in the new year!
